Book of the Month: Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Tate Collins is too busy for love and Miles Archer isn’t looking for it. However, when these two characters meet, there’s no denying they have a strong physical attraction. It’s not love at first sight and with the caveats these two bring to the table, there’s only room for sex. But as their story unfolds, love gets ugly.

“So you give it up. You give it all up. You never want love again, no matter what kind it is, because no type of love will ever be worth living through the ugly love again.”

If you’re a book nerd like me (and even if you’re not) you’ve probably heard of Colleen Hoover. If you haven’t, where have you been?? Colleen Hoover is a New York Times best-selling author of twenty-two novels and novellas. Her work falls under the categories of New Adult and Young Adult Contemporary and Psychological Thriller. I’ve heard her name and a lot about her work, mainly via BookTok, but I only just read my first book of hers this week, Ugly Love. A few of my friends recommended this book to me last year, so I purchased it. The book sat on my shelf unread for quite some time and I finally picked it up to read it. Two days later, I finished the book.

It.

Was.

So.

Good!

About the Book

Tate Collins is a nurse who is going back to school to pursue a master’s degree. She falls for her neighbor across the hall, Miles Archer, who is a pilot. The story goes back and forth between the two main characters. Tate’s perspective is told during the present day whereas Miles’ story takes place six years earlier. Tate’s perspective shares her thoughts and feelings about Miles and how she’s falling for him. Miles’ character is very guarded, and he doesn’t give much away. We read glimpses of his past when he shares his perspective though and come to learn that his past causes him to be like this. In keeping his guard up, he blocks out Tate, who is very much trying to figure out who this mystery man is and what happened to make him the way he is today. However, Miles has two rules, “Don’t ask about my past and never expect a future.” These rules make things complicated as the two characters start acting on their physical attraction with a "no-strings attached arrangement.”

As the story continues, we receive more information about Miles’ past. A heartbreaking story with details I won’t share in this blog post because I truly believe you need to read this book for yourself. Let’s just say, I shed tears reading it. We learn why Miles is so guarded and afraid of love and why he let six years pass before letting someone else in again.

Rating

Ugly Love is a beautifully written story filled with love and heartbreak, and as you may have inferred, describes the ugly side of love which in my opinion, not many love stories do. It definitely includes some spicy scenes as well, which I was not expecting but they were tastefully written. I would give Ugly Love 5 out of 5 stars. This book had me crying by the end and I couldn’t recommend it more.

Next time you're out and about, stop by the bookstore and pick up Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover. You won’t be sorry you did!

March Favorites 2024

Without further ado, I bring you my top items in the following categories for the month of March: books, makeup, skincare, food/drinks, miscellaneous, and shower things. Let's get to it, shall we? Book: The Coworker by Freida McFadden Oddly enough, one of my sixth-grade students recommended this book to me. Suffice to say, she's well-read for her age. This book had me hooked from chapter one. I'm not normally one for thrillers or suspense in stories, in fact, I typically enjoy books on the opposite end of the spectrum. My cup of tea would be of the YA and romance genre, mainly because I'm a big wimp; however, this book may have converted me.  Dawn Schiff is the reliable employee. She shows up to work on time every day and takes her breaks at regularly scheduled times. Like clockwork, her coworkers know where she is at any given moment. Natalie Farrell is Dawn's coworker and desk mate. Natalie is described as the beautiful and popular employee in the office. She is e...

Holiday Gift Guide 2022

When the three wise men brought gifts for the baby Jesus, I honestly don’t think they had a clue as to what traditions they started for Christmas nowadays. I use this reference lightly, as I’m not hugely religious, however, it provides a good analogy to the simplicity of what Christmas once was — a time to spend with loved ones. I like to believe that the gifts were merely a token, a fraction of what these wise men could give to the son of God. But, I digress.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I love to shop! (Especially for myself…) But shopping for others, now that is hard work. People can be so particular and you certainly don’t want to offend anyone with a well-intentioned gift. What was once a simple token of affection is now almost a sport. I play into it every year simply because I love the holidays. And whether the wise men had envisioned our modern traditions is besides the point. We do it because we love our family members and want to show them so through the gifts we buy them. I...

November Favorites

With the end of another month comes another segment of my monthly favorites. I enjoy watching monthly favorites videos because they always inspire me to try something new. I also just enjoy seeing what people gravitate to. So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite things for the month of November. Book: Verity by Colleen Hoover My book of the month for November (which will come out in December due to this month’s Thanksgiving post) is Verity by Colleen Hoover. I won’t share too many details here because I’ll be sharing them next week, but I will say that this book had me reading on the edge for the entire 336 pages. It’s a different beat than what Hoover typically writes – romance, but she truly mastered the thriller genre. Be sure to come back next week for an in-depth review on Verity or just go buy the book now because you won’t regret it. Verity - By Colleen Hoover : Target Makeup item: L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara I have a lot of mascara in my make-up drawer. And I’m ...
